What is AAC?

✨Happy AAC Awareness Month ✨

Did you know that AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication?

It encompasses all the ways that someone might communicate besides talking. This can include:

🖐️Gestures and body language: Pointing, nodding, shaking your head

😝Facial expressions: Smiling, frowning, raising eyebrows

✍️Visual supports: Pictures, symbols, written words

🤟Sign language: AUSLAN, key word signing

⌨️Assistive technology: Speech-generated devices, communication apps, switch access, eye gaze and more

AAC empowers individuals to express themself using a communication method that suits their needs and preferences. Let’s celebrate the diversity of communication this month and every month!
